How To Clean Your Wine Glasses
Posted on Tuesday, June 9th, 2020
Nothing ruins a great toast faster than glasses covered in fingerprints and lipstick. Do you want to make you wine glasses glisten and gleam before your next dinner party?
We’ve put together our top tips for making your glasses look as good as the day you brought them, just in time for your best bottle of red.
1. The Dishwasher
Controversial, but you can definitely get a safe and thorough wash by utilising the dishwasher. Use the air-dry setting, and skip the heated drying cycle to finish. Also, it’s important to space your glasses properly to avoid any clinking which can cause scratches and damage.
2. Hand Wash
For the longevity of your glasses, hand washing is your best bet. For the best sparkling finish, you should be focusing your attention on the outside and rim of the glass. These are the parts that make the biggest difference and are often overlooked. For a full clean you can always swirl a small amount of lukewarm water and detergent inside the glass and get rid of any markings inside the cup. Don’t forget that less is definitely more when it comes to using detergent, you only need a drop to leave your entire glass sparkling like new.
3. Vinegar
Have your wine glasses been through one too many happy hours? If your glasses need a little more TLC white vinegar is the quickest way to breathe new life into them.
Place your white vinegar in a bowl and place it in the microwave until it’s slightly warm, then wipe down your glasses with a clean cloth, focusing in on any red wine stains or smudges. If you have a large collection of dirty glasses, fill your sink with vinegar and let your collection soak for a few hours.
How To Dry Your Wine Glass
Washing your glass is half the battle! To make your glasses shine you need to dry them efficiently, without leaving any watermarks.
To get the best streak-free finish you’re going to want to both dry and polish your glasses. A microfibre cloth is a perfect tool to dry and avoid water-markings while giving it that polished finish.
Voila! A crystal clear glass, good enough for your fanciest wine.
Bonus Tips
- Don’t ever let red wine puddles soak in your glass overnight! It might be tempting to leave your wine glass and get into bed, but in the future you will not be impressed trying to get rid of red wine stains the next morning.
- Before you put any glass in the dishwasher, make sure you’ve double-checked the care instructions! If you’ve inherited a crystal set from your Aunt, it might just be safer to wash them by hand.
- Microfibre towels are your friend. They’re perfect for not only drying but also for polishing, giving your glasses that fine dining finishing touch.
